Farm2Work Market is Open!

This post expired on February 24, 2015.

“I’m always struck by how successful we have been at hitting the bull’s-eye of the wrong target. I mean we have learned- for example, in cattle we have learned how to plant, fertilize and harvest corn using global positioning satellite technology, and nobody sits back and asks, *”But should we be feeding cows corn?" We’ve become a culture of technicians. We’re all into the how of it and nobody’s stepping back and saying “But why?”* by Joel Salatin in Food Inc.

So, do you read the labels on your ground beef and chicken when you purchase from the supermarkets? For so many years, I just “ass-u-me(d)” that it really was just ground beef. I never thought to ask: what did the cow eat? It really makes me wonder when something as simple and basic as EATING became so complicated? According to Food Inc., the way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000.

Fortunately, we have another source for food in Central Arkansas. The value of the grassfed meats on this Market far exceed the cost of your health care in the years to come for you & your family.

Know your farmer, know your food…

This week, our featured grower is Farm Girl Natural Foods: “…a small collective of independent farmers working to bring our happy, sustainably grown products to the discerning eaters of central Arkansas. We grow meat naturally, from the ground up. This means our pigs, cattle, and layer hens live their entire lives on fresh, quality pasture. As they rotate their way around 18 acres of river bottom land, our livestock get to live the happiest, healthiest lives possible. Our cattle eat grass, the pigs run and root to their contentment, and the poultry get to scratch and peck themselves full of bugs and grass. No animal byproducts, hormones, or routine antibiotics. We believe this commitment to the whole-systems health of our animals, as well as the ground they live on is evident in the quality of our meats.”

In addition to our “regulars” – Ratchford Buffalo Farm has listed this week! They come all the way from Marshall, AR to deliver.

On another note, I want to send out a special Thank You to the Arkansas Women’s Business Center, a division of Winrock International, for all of their help and back end support. “The AWBC is committed to providing technical assistance, training, and access to capital services tailored to meet the needs of women business owners. The Center is funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. It is in a network of over 100 Centers located through the nation.” With their help, we are working on making your online experience easier and more efficient! They, too, believe we have a great idea and have worked hard to help us find the right avenues for support & growth along the way.

Regular members know this already, so, to the new members: We are small enough to be really flexible with your orders, so, help us make it easy for you! As always, please do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns. Feel free to select a different drop off location each week if your busy schedule requires a change. If you find out about a schedule change after the Market has closed, just give me a call & I will make the change for you! :-)

Also available on this week’s Market: Vegetables, Tea, Rice, Nuts, Mushrooms, Honey, Jams & Jellies, Herbs & Spices, Fruits, Eggs, Baked Goods, Bulk Herbs & Spices, and Baking Mixes.

Finally, thank you for your business!
